Mearns' quail, also known as Montezuma quail, are small, New World quails native to Mexico and parts of the southwestern United States, with males having a striking harlequin face pattern and females being plain brownThey are known for their long toes, which they use to dig for food, and their diet primarily consists of bulbs, tubers, and invertebrates.

 Appearance and Behavior:
  • Physical Characteristics: Mearns' quail have round bodies, short tails, and round wings, with males having a distinctive harlequin face pattern and white spots on their sides. Females are plain brown with a hint of the male's head and back pattern.

  • Diet: They are known for digging up food, such as bulbs, tubers, and invertebrates, using their long claws on their strong feet.

  • Habitat: They are found in native perennial grasslands in mountains of the southwestern U.S. and Mexico, especially around oaks, and also in stream corridors, higher portions of deserts, and pine forests at high elevations.
  •
  • Breeding: Mearns quail start forming pair bonds in early summer but often delay breeding and nesting until later in the summer, with nesting success tied to summer rains that encourage a flush of new habitat cover and food.

  • Flight: They are known for their explosive rise from almost underfoot, a short dash above or around some obstruction, and then coming to earth, with rare occasions of longer, downhill glides on set wings.

  • Other Names: They are also known as the harlequin quail (for the male's striking pattern) and the fool quail (for its behavior
